Knowing the most important chapters for JEE Main 2027 makes your preparation easier. Every chapter in the syllabus matters, but previous year question papers (PYQs) show which topics come up again and again. NTA does not fix chapter-wise weightage, so the priorities in this article are based on question trends from past papers.
In this article, you will find the high-weightage chapters in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, how to prepare each subject, and which chapters you can keep for later. The number of questions from a chapter changes from shift to shift, so use these lists to decide the order of your study, not to skip the rest of the syllabus.
JEE Main is the entrance exam for NITs, IIITs and other Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). In JEE Main 2026, 16,04,854 unique candidates registered for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) across both sessions. With so many students sitting the same exam, the order in which you study chapters makes a real difference to your marks.
What is the JEE Main exam pattern?
Before you pick chapters, look at how the paper is set. In JEE Main 2026, Paper 1 had Physics, Chemistry and Maths with equal weight. Each subject had 25 questions: 20 MCQs in Section A and 5 numerical questions in Section B. So the full paper had 75 questions for 300 marks, and you got 3 hours to solve it.
Every correct answer gave you 4 marks, and every wrong answer cost you 1 mark, in both sections. There was no choice, so all 25 questions in each subject were compulsory, including the numericals. Since numericals also carry negative marks, answer them only when you have actually worked them out. NTA will confirm the 2027 pattern in its information bulletin on jeemain.nta.nic.in, so check it once it comes out.
For timing, NTA’s exam calendar dated 16 September 2026 lists JEE Main 2027 Session 1 for 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027, with 31 January as a buffer day. These dates are tentative and can change. You can read more in our post on the NTA exam calendar 2026-27.
Why should you start with high-weightage chapters?
JEE Main 2026 had 19 shifts, which means 475 questions in each subject. In every subject, the top 8 or 9 chapters gave about half of these questions. So when time is short, these chapters give you the most marks for every hour you study. You still need the full syllabus, because the other half of the paper comes from the remaining chapters, but these are the ones to finish and revise first.

How to prepare Physics for JEE Main 2027
Start with Optics. Geometrical Optics and Wave Optics together gave 60 questions in 2026, more than any other area of Physics. After that, do the electricity chapters as one block, because Electrostatics, Current Electricity and Electromagnetic Induction gave 74 questions together.
Kinetic Theory of Gases (KTG), Thermodynamics and Modern Physics bring many numerical questions, so solve problems from them every day to build speed and accuracy. Also keep Measurement Errors (20 questions) and Units and Dimensions (15 questions) on your list. They are short chapters and their questions are quick to solve. Keep a formula page for each chapter and write down where each formula is used. For a week-by-week Physics plan, read our JEE Physics study plan.
Most important Chemistry chapters for JEE Main 2027
In Chemistry, Inorganic chapters gave the most questions in JEE Main 2026, so they are at the top of this table.

Note: NTA has not released the JEE Main 2027 syllabus yet. Check each chapter against the official syllabus once it is out.
How to prepare Chemistry for JEE Main 2027
Start with Inorganic. Coordination Compounds and d- and f-Block Elements gave 69 questions together in 2026. Read these NCERT chapters line by line and revise them more than once, because Inorganic questions test facts and exceptions that you can only remember through repeated reading.
In Organic, learn the reactions of Amines and of Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, and revise the tests in Practical Organic Chemistry. In Physical, practise numericals from Atomic Structure, Chemical Kinetics and Mole Concept every week. Flashcards for reactions and formulas help a lot in quick revision before the exam. For a detailed revision plan, read our JEE Chemistry strategy.
Most important Maths chapters for JEE Main 2027

Note: Matrix’s analysis of the 6 April 2026 JEE Main Session 2 Shift 2 paper highlighted matrices and determinants, 3D geometry, vectors, sequences and series, and differential equations among the notable Mathematics topics. This is evidence from an individual shift, not a prediction of fixed 2027 weightage.
How to prepare Maths for JEE Main 2027
Start with Vectors and 3D Geometry. Together, they gave 57 questions in 2026, about 3 in every paper, and no other Maths chapter came close. Next, take up Calculus, because Definite Integration, Differential Equations and Area Under Curve gave 72 questions together.
Coordinate Geometry is easy to underestimate because each chapter is small. Put together, Straight Line, Circle, Parabola, Ellipse and Hyperbola gave 69 questions. Short chapters like Permutations and Combinations, Binomial Theorem and Probability reward speed, so solve a few questions from them every day and keep a formula sheet for Calculus and Coordinate Geometry. For chapter-wise practice books, see our list of Maths books for JEE Main, and for a weekly plan, read our JEE Maths strategy.
Which chapters can you keep for later?
Some chapters gave very few questions in 2026. In Physics, Mathematical Tools and Principle of Communication had zero questions, and Heat Transfer and Wave on a String had only 1 each. In Chemistry, Equivalent Concept gave only 6 questions across 19 shifts. In Maths, Solution of Triangle had zero, Sets had 1 and Method of Differentiation had 2.
Keep these chapters for the end of your plan. Do not drop them completely, because one question can still come from any of them, but finish the high-weightage chapters first.
What should you do every week?
Give one full mock test every week in a 3-hour sitting, just like the real exam, and solve JEE Main 2026 papers, since they are the closest guide to the 2027 level. Mock tests build your speed and show you exactly where you lose marks. After every test, note the chapters where you lost marks and give them extra time the next week.
Where should you start tomorrow?
Cover the full syllabus over the year, but finish the chapters in the tables above first. For tomorrow, pick one top chapter from each subject, such as Geometrical Optics, Coordination Compounds and Vectors and 3D Geometry, and solve 10 past JEE Main questions from each. All the best.
