Application Window Reopened Once, No Further Extension
The Selection Committee said the reopening followed representations from students who were unable to complete their registration within the original deadline. In its notification, the DME described the move as a one-time measure and clarified that applications or documents submitted after the revised deadline of July 27, 3 PM, would not be accepted. Candidates who had already applied before July 23 did not need to reapply.
The DME had also clarified through a separate notification, issued on July 23, that candidates no longer need to upload their NEET UG scorecard while applying, easing one step of the registration process.
A Delayed Admission Cycle
This year’s Tamil Nadu counselling timeline has been pushed back compared with previous years, largely because of the disruption to the national exam schedule. NEET UG 2026 was originally conducted on May 3 but was cancelled by the NTA after reports of a question paper leak surfaced from multiple states. The exam was re-conducted on June 21 at more than 5,440 centres across India, including over 307 centres in Tamil Nadu’s 31 districts, with enhanced security and mandatory biometric verification.
The NTA released the final answer key and re-exam results together on July 16, along with the all-India merit list. State counselling authorities, including Tamil Nadu’s DME, prepare their own state-specific rank lists separately, based on NEET scores, domicile eligibility, category, and quota rules.
What Happens After the Rank List Is Released
Once published, the Tamil Nadu NEET UG rank list will list candidates’ names, application numbers, NEET roll numbers, community, and common rank. Candidates whose names appear in the list will proceed to document verification and choice filling, followed by seat allotment.
The DME has indicated it will issue separate provisional rank lists for the government quota (85% state-quota seats), the management quota covering private and self-financing colleges, and the 7.5% reservation quota for students from government schools. The Selection Committee has not yet announced dates for choice filling, seat allotment, or the start of Round 1 counselling.
Candidates are advised to check the official portals regularly rather than rely on unofficial sources, since counselling dates this year have already been revised more than once.
